My joy is in knowing Jesus Christ. You hear how Christians read the Bible and follow what it teaches. Why do they care so much about what’s written in a book thousands of years old? Because the central message of the Bible is Jesus Christ, and it’s the best news that exists on earth. I’ve typed up the gospel (good news) message, read on.

Where do you want to go when you die? There is life after death. Most people think they are going to heaven. The Bible says that heaven is a free gift. It is not earned or deserved by good actions (Galatians 2:16). God extends an offer of life and heaven to us. It’s a free offer for those who would receive it.

Humans have rejected God by trying to do things our own ways without God. If we do anything wrong in word, thought or deed, it is missing the mark of God’s perfect standard in the Bible, the 10 Commandment. Have you ever killed someone? Have you cheated or lied? If you have murdered, you have broken God’s law. Even if you lie, steal, or covet, you have violated God’s law. We are commanded to be “perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” (Matthew 5:48). No matter who you are, you have done wrong.

We cannot save ourselves. We may try to be good moral people, but even if we live a life that is mostly good, it is still short of the perfect standard God demands.

God. Who is God? He is the ruler of the world, and the Bible tells us that He made the world. (Rev. 4:11). He is in charge of all that happens on earth. God made us and loves us. He is loving and merciful therefore doesn’t want to punish us for the sins we committed.

God will not let us rebel forever. Just as judges in our societies must punish law-breakers, God is infinitely more just and therefore must punish sin. This judgement is to cut off offenders from him permanently. Because God is the source of life and everything good, being cut off from him means death and hell. It is an everlasting punishment. It’s a prospect we all face, because all people have sinned, and deserve punishment (Romans 3:23, 6:23).

God solved this problem in the person of Jesus Christ. He came to earth in 0 b.c., and was fully God and fully man. In the Bible says that he was the same as God and came down to earth (read the book of John)! This divine person lived in perfect obedience to God, he never sinned and didn’t deserve punishment. He died and rose from the dead to pay the penalty for our sins and to purchase a place in heaven for us which He offers as a gift. He was our substitute for punishment. This undeserved gift of forgiveness paid our debt to God in full. Christ rose from the dead and is alive now, today. He is not some old guy who just died. He exists now, and Christians have an exciting relationship with him every day.

We can receive this gift of forgiveness through faith (Ephesians 2). By trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life, we receive the gift. We don’t trust in our own goodness anymore, because that won’t save us. We trust in the what Jesus Christ did for us. You bank on it, and believe on it just as surely as you believe your computer is on.

If this all makes sense to you and you want to receive this gift of being saved from punishment, pray! Prayer is just talking to God. You tell Him you understand this news, that you are a sinner, and that you will submit to Christ as the king everything. Your life is his. That one step sounds like a lot, but what you gain is so much more. You tell God that you will “put on” his goodness and holiness. Although your life has previously been disobediant and sinful, you trade that for an “alien” obediance: that is the perfect obediance of Christ-he took your punishment. It’s just as if you traded your dirtiest shirt with your friend for a new one. You put on the righteousness of Christ.

Through Jesus Christ, we can have an awesome, exciting relationship with God. That’s what being a Christian is about, knowing God. John 17:3 says: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” It’s is so awesome. Best news ever. Being a Christian is getting to know and enjoy God personally through Jesus Christ.
